KLANG: A scrap metal collector was sentenced to 25 years in jail and 15 strokes of the cane by a Sessions Court here Thursday, after he pleaded guilty to raping an eight-year-old girl.

Sures Muniandy, 27, was accused of committing the offence at a female toilet in SR(C) Yoke Kuan, Sekinchan in Sabak Bernam, around 9pm on Jun 4.

He was charged under Section 376(2)(e) of the Penal Code which carries a jail sentence of up to 30 years with whipping, if found guilty.

Judge Datuk Anita Harun ordered that the jail sentence be served from the day he was arrested, adding that Sures had two previous criminal records.

Deputy public prosecutor Nizi Shazril Ithnin had earlier requested the court for a severe punishment, considering the victim's age and that she had sustained injury.

Sures, who was unrepresented, broke into tears on hearing his sentence. In his mitigation, he said he was drunk when he committed the offence.

According to the case statement, the victim, who was attending a wedding reception, was raped when she went to the toilet alone while her brother-in-law and sister waited at the canteen nearby.

The accused locked the door from the inside and raped the victim before escaping.

However, the brother-in-law, with help from the public, managed to apprehend the man, who was still naked and hiding in a drain about 100m from the toilet.
